Creating a Lifelong Love for the Water: Our Teaching Philosophy Explained

March 2, 2026

American philosopher and educator John Dewey once said, “Education is not preparation for life; education is life itself.” This perspective views learning as a holistic, integrated process that shapes character and understanding and equips individuals with the tools they need to live a confident and rewarding life.

At
Nashville Swim Academy (NSA), we use a similar approach to learning. Our swimming teaching philosophy is built on a developmental progression that prioritizes positive exposure to the water, adaptive instruction, and skill mastery over time. We don’t view swim lessons as a cookie-cutter, summer-only experience, but instead have designed a year-round program that recognizes individual skill levels and levels of comfort in the water and offers lessons year-round.

We provide a continuum of learning that begins with building confidence and orientation in the water, advances through clearly defined safety competencies, and ultimately leads to the development of technical skills and advanced proficiency. Every phase is grounded in how children learn and develop physically, cognitively, emotionally, and socially.

FUNdamentals First: Building Confidence in the Water

Before our swimmers can safely float, propel forward from the wall, and develop basic swim strokes, they must understand how their bodies feel in the water, how to orient and balance themselves, and how to master breath control.

These are the skills we focus on in our FUNdamentals classes, the first tier of our
swimming academy program, and the ideal entry point for first-time swimmers. With four thoughtfully designed class options: Parent & Me; Terrific 2s; Beginner 3s; and Beginner 4–6s, we place our swimmers in groups based on age and skill level so they can learn alongside peers at a similar stage. These classes focus on building balance, buoyancy, breath control, and safe movement, helping swimmers develop comfort and confidence in the water and setting the stage for a lifelong love of the water.

All swimmers receive clear instruction and individual attention from highly trained instructors as they learn and practice each new skill together. Classes are kept small, and we focus on age-appropriate communication that adds a little extra fun and creativity to each lesson. For example, when learning to propel forward on their tummies with their faces in the water, swimmers are taught to extend their arms forward “like Superman.” This helps them visualize body placement as they establish balance and streamline their positioning. Skills like these are repeated as often as necessary with patience and encouragement to solidify core competencies and help kids understand that with practice, they can achieve their goals.

Our classes follow predictable routines, which help swimmers feel safe and supported. Kids are given the time they need to refine their buoyancy and breath control skills so they can move from Superman arms to “big arms” swimming.

Consistent, Positive Exposure to Swimming and SAFEty

At NSA we recognize that learning to swim can be challenging, and we ensure every interaction with our swimmers is purposeful. Instructors let their swimmers know they have every confidence in their abilities, which translates into students developing confidence in themselves. The mood is light and enthusiastic while kids develop the self-reliance that is foundational to consistent progress. Feedback and corrections are provided in a supportive manner, and rules around safety are consistently practiced. Swimmers are taught to use their “walking feet” on the deck, making it easier for them to experience excitement without veering into unsafe behaviors, and they learn they can never enter the water unless they’re accompanied by an adult or have “grownup eyes watching them.”

Adaptive Learning in a Structured Program

Our instructors are experts at identifying the individual needs of each swimmer, observing, assessing, and adjusting repetition and skill-building as needed. Kids progress through structured levels, which, after graduating from the FUNdamentals levels, are followed by SAFEty, and then TECHnique levels. The pace our swimmers experience during these classes and progressions is always tailored to individual readiness.

Research has shown that children who learn to swim early in life demonstrate advanced cognitive, motor, and language skills compared to their non-swimming peers. For parents who value what learning to swim offers a child and are Googling “
swimming classes near me,” our swim academy provides essential foundations for confidence, safety, skills development, and technique.

Parents of very young children searching for the best
swimming academy near me will find an exceptional start to their child’s aquatic journey with our Parent & Me classes at NSA. This is where infants and toddlers aged 4 to 23 months learn alongside a parent in the pool. Together with their parent and instructor, infants and toddlers begin building sensory comfort, developing safety awareness, and engaging in early skill-building activities. In the Terrific 2s classes, children develop greater independence while still benefiting from highly individualized attention in classes of just two swimmers to one instructor.

By the time our swimmers enter 3s and 4-6s classes, lessons are segmented by skill level and comfort in the water. Kids who are reticent, tense, or fearful will require a different approach compared to kids who can swim across the pool and are comfortable breathing when needed. By grouping kids according to individual proficiencies and emotional readiness, kids feel good about their progress, and lessons are naturally more productive. It’s a mindful calibration that builds confidence and self-esteem and supports the social, emotional, and cognitive aspects of Swim.

Our program is intentionally designed to teach through a variety of methods, including clear verbal instruction, visual demonstration, guided physical support, and the natural resistance of the water itself. We understand that every swimmer learns differently, so we layer instruction to engage multiple learning styles. As swimmers progress through clearly defined activities, they begin to connect what they see, hear, and feel — learning that success comes from listening, focusing, and confidently putting instruction into action. Skills are introduced in manageable steps and refined class by class, helping kids develop commitment, persistence, and patience with themselves. They learn to solve multi-step problems and apply feedback to improve abilities that transfer beyond the pool to other recreational activities, school experiences, and sports. Over time, little swimmers develop confidence rooted in competence earned through effort. This helps children internalize the idea that challenges can be met successfully with patience, practice, and a can-do attitude.
