Swim Safety Never Takes a Break: Why Winter Lessons Matter

January 13, 2026

Winter signals the end of many fair-weather activities, but your child’s swimming lessons shouldn’t be one of them. Consistent, year-round swim lessons are important for sustaining a child’s learning and skill development, and far more preferable to introducing new skills just a few weeks per year.

As a child grows, maintaining their exposure to the water and how their bodies move in it offers a more natural progression in
swim safety, confidence, retention, and coordination.

At
Nashville Swim Academy (NSA), the launch of our new, flagship swimming facility in The Nations aligns nicely with the opportunity to enroll your child in Middle Tennessee’s premier swim lesson program this winter. Check out our year-round 2025/2026 program and use our Class Finder tool to select the right level for your child’s age and experience.

Debunking the “Off-Season” Myth for
Swim Lessons

When it comes to swimming, there is no “off-season.” In fact, as winter rolls around and kids are spending more time indoors, many are starving for out-of-home activities where they can have fun and burn off energy (even if they don’t quite know how to express it).
Year-round swimming engages a child’s full body and mind, keeping them active, boosting motor skills development and focus, and improving sleep as well.

Keeping Up Continuity

For kids, skill retention occurs through repetition, in which fundamental movements are encoded in the neuromuscular system. The longer the gap between these repetitions, the weaker the neural pathways become. A child who moves forward in their
swim classes month to month, acclimating to the pressure of the water, how to remain balanced in it, and how to move around in it, will naturally progress more effortlessly than a child who needs to relearn what they’d been taught a year ago. This consistency offers a stress-free progression.

At NSA, we practice an adaptive learning process, where our instructors are trained to identify the individual needs of each swimmer, meeting them where they are week after week and helping them achieve new goals. With the ability to break their lessons down into manageable parts, our instructors give young swimmers the chance to build on previous class activities so they enjoy a deep sense of satisfaction and accomplishment as they refine their coordination and conquer more complex skills.

The NSA Difference

NSA instructors are highly qualified professionals who are passionate about helping kids develop safety skills and a lifelong love of the water. Here, we keep our class sizes small while aligning placement with age and skill level.

Kids naturally feel more comfortable when they’re practicing a new skill along with their peers, learning the same things at the same time. These smaller class sizes also ensure each child gets the individual attention and feedback they need to build on their swim fundamentals and
swimming pool safety with confidence.

Kids in the NSA program enjoy consistent, positive exposure to the water and to instructors who are committed to excellence. This ongoing positive energy is contagious and can transform a hesitant little swimmer into one who feels safe, supported, and ready to leave their parents’ side to join their cohort. This attitude ensures everyone is in the moment and no child is overwhelmed by anxiety-fuelled ‘what ifs.’

With the opening of our new pool, there’s an added element of excitement to swim. Parents can watch their children from a viewing room that extends the entire length of the pool, features expansive windows, and is equipped with air conditioning and room for younger siblings to play. Kids enjoy a 75-foot-long pool that is heated to a comfortable 88°F and kept crystal clear with a state-of-the-art filtration system.

If you’re a parent looking for swim lessons in Nashville, TN that families have relied on and praised for years, you’ll find that at Nashville Swim Academy.

How Classes Are Structured at NSA

Classes at NSA begin with
Parent & Me, a level designed for little ones aged 4 to 23 months. With their parent or caretaker right there in the water with them and a student/teacher ratio of 6:1, this is where budding swimmers are first introduced to safety in the water, sensory exploration, and foundational skill-building. By putting the FUN in fundamentals from a very early age, we sow the seeds for a confident and resilient learning journey.

The next phase of classes at the Fundamentals level includes the
Terrific 2s, Beginner 3s, and Beginner 4 to 6s. Once kids have developed and honed their fundamental swim skills, we move on to the Safety level. These classes include Skill Builder 3s, 4 to 6s, and 7 to 11s for kids who are ready to build the confidence needed to swim without a floatation device and learn to catch a breath while swimming. They’re also ideal for kids who need to ease into the process so that any hesitation around swimming is eventually replaced by excitement and comfort.

Our final phase of classes is the Technique level. This is appropriate for strong swimmers as young as  4 to 6 who are learning to coordinate breathing, arm pull, leg movements and hip rotation movements more efficiently.
Stroke Technique 1, Stroke Technique 2, and Stroke Technique 3 foster confidence and prepare swimmers to handle various aquatic challenges with ease. This level also lays a strong foundation for those who plan to join a competitive swim team in the future. By Stroke Tech 3, swimmers are proficient in freestyle and backstroke, and the basic elements of breaststroke and butterfly.
