Structured Summer Activity: Why Swim Lessons Are the Smartest Investment This Season | Nashville Swim Academy in Nashville TN

Summer is now here, and we know that with it comes the beautiful, yet slightly chaotic freedom kids have once school’s out. And although these few months of unstructured time are great and have their place, growing kids still need activities and routines they can look forward to, and a schedule that prevents a daily screen-time spiral that can happen all too easily.

That's exactly why so many local families make
swim lessons in Nashville, TN, a cornerstone of their summer activities. At Nashville Swim Academy (NSA), we offer a tailored program for kids of all ages. From infants and toddlers (Parent & Me classes) to kids in kindergarten through middle school, our goal is to help parents instill in their children a lifelong love of the water. No matter your child’s swim level, our programs are designed to build on all proficiencies and skills, from beginner to novice and above.

More Than Splashing Around

There’s a difference between a fun afternoon at the pool and structured swim lessons. One is recreational and a big part of summer enjoyment. The other is developmental, focusing on the physical, cognitive, and emotional aspects of learning to swim.

Our
summer swim lessons at NSA are built around safety and consistent, intentional skill-building. As our founding owner, Krysten Call, explains: "In lieu of the school year, where kids have structure, it's good to have consistent opportunities to continue that. Swim lessons provide that consistency where kids get the benefit of engagement and feedback; physical feedback from the water and emotional feedback from instructors cheering them on when they master a skill, and showing them which adjustments to make to achieve their goals. All these interactions are valuable as kids grow and learn outside of the school environment."

Structure That Builds Confidence

Kids grow rapidly, and it always seems most noticeable after the summer months when they return to school in the fall. Some kids can grow a good couple of inches, and this can make coordinating movements in their developing bodies difficult, especially if activities aren’t practiced consistently. Our year-round programming ensures that families who want their kids to learn to swim in Nashville as they grow don't lose ground between seasons.

Classes are intentionally small so that swimmers receive the individual attention they require. We divide them into tiers: FUNdamentals, SAFEty, and TECHnique.

The FUNdamentals tier is for beginners of all ages, from Parent & Me lessons for infants and toddlers aged 4 to 23 months to classes for children aged 2, 3, and 4 to 6. These classes focus on building comfort, confidence, and foundational swimming skills in a positive, encouraging environment. Swimmers develop buoyancy, breath control, balance, calm movement, and body awareness while learning safe water entry and exit skills.

Once swimmers graduate into the SAFEty tier, the focus shifts toward stronger propulsion, balance, rhythm, and practical water safety skills. At this stage, swimmers work on pushing off from the wall, front and back floating positions, refining independent jumps into the water, identifying safe places to swim to, and developing coordinated kicking and arm movements. They also begin practicing swim-breathe-swim patterns that help build confidence and strengthen safety skills in deeper or more dynamic water environments.

By the TECHnique tier, swimmers are ready to refine stroke mechanics. This level emphasizes stronger technique, greater endurance, and increased confidence, while also laying a solid foundation for swimmers who may eventually pursue competitive swimming opportunities.

For those seeking
kids' swim classes in The Nations, our new flagship, state-of-the-art facility is right in your neighborhood and designed with Middle Tennessee families in mind. Every feature and convenience was conceptualized and implemented to give kids and parents the tools and conveniences they need to enjoy a comprehensive program at the highest levels of goal-focused learning.

New This Summer: Partnering With Davidson Academy Summer Camp

We're excited to announce a summer camp partnership with Davidson Academy's Bear Camp, created to bring the fun of swimming in the summer to even more Nashville families.

As part of Davidson Academy's Bear Camp programming, campers come to NSA daily from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. for focused swim and skill-building training alongside the traditional Bear Camp activities.

Davidson Academy's Summer Adventure day camps also feature weekly swim days at our pool, with optional daily swim lesson add-ons for families who want to continue on with our unique, award-winning program.

The Smartest Investment Is an Investment in Health and Safety

As Krysten puts it: "Having the ability to build physical and emotional confidence — filling those cups that kids all need filled — is really powerful. Swim lessons provide all of that in a setting geared toward creating a positive environment."

In those summer months full of endless languid days and what can become a full-time screen habit, structured routines like swim lessons offer kids a sense that there’s more to life than a device that provides instant rewards for passive involvement. Swimming helps kids understand what they’re capable of. It gives them the opportunity to experience the joy of success and peer support. It has been shown to improve cognitive development alongside physical and emotional benefits. And it’s a lifelong skill everyone should have in their toolkit.
