Inside the Lesson: How NSA’s Instructors Build Confidence in Every Swimmer

November 28, 2025

As children grow and develop, parents usually have a natural sense of when to introduce them to new activities. Choosing swimming during those early years can give children a unique confidence boost. When they learn to move, float, and make decisions in the water, they often bring that newfound assurance into school, friendships, and everyday challenges.

While we generally recommend parents participate in the Parent & Me classes when their little ones are between 4 and 23 months (and then carry on through the Terrific 2s and Beginner 3s), that’s not always possible. If your child is four, five, or six and new to swimming, our Beginner 4 – 6s program is a great place to start. We’ve established a unique program at Nashville Swim Academy, specifically designed to instill confidence through a blend of positive reinforcement, personalized attention, and skills-building tailored to every swimmer’s level of comfort and ability.

Top-Tier Instruction Parents Trust

The big difference-maker at NSA is our swimming instructors. Each of them is a highly trained professional who is committed to excellence and to passing their love of the water on to their students. Our adaptive teaching approach allows us to support each child’s progress while keeping class sizes small and groups developmentally aligned. Learning alongside peers with similar abilities helps kids feel confident, connected, and free from the distractions or self-conscious moments that can happen in mixed-age groups.

Ours is a program where building confidence and safety skills goes hand in hand with creating an emotionally and physically safe environment. Here, your child can make new friends, develop a love for the water, and take pride in accomplishing new things in each class.

Creating a Supportive Space for Kids to Progress

Children learn best when they feel emotionally secure. The instructors at NSA, under the direction of the program’s founding director, Krysten Call, work intentionally to create an environment where kids feel ready to try new things, excited about practicing, and motivated to keep going.

We begin by putting the FUN in FUNdamentals! These beginner classes are aimed at developing a swimming foundation that leads to comfort and safety in the water. By focusing on buoyancy, breath control, and movement, we set the stage for a lifetime of joy (and success) in the water. We pair age-appropriate instruction with gentle encouragement to help swimmers relax and feel ready to learn. We break skills down into manageable actions while paying close attention to unspoken cues that indicate whether a child needs a little more support or a little more repetition. When kids feel understood and supported, they are much more willing to take a meaningful step toward what might be an intimidating task, which then leads to a big leap in confidence.

This foundation is especially important for parents who are searching for swim lessons in Nashville and need to know they’re making the right choice. If you’re looking for swim lessons that focus on how to be more confident in water, the program we’ve put together offers comprehensive skills-building balanced with fun, competence, and safety.

Breaking Skills Into Achievable Steps

NSA’s instructors are experts at introducing unfamiliar skills in ways that spark interest and curiosity. We help kids adjust to the way their bodies feel in the water so they gain an intrinsic awareness of an environment where they explore balance and buoyancy. As children build skills, their curiosity naturally builds with them. We guide them through each stage, helping them see that going underwater isn’t as overwhelming as it may seem. By focusing on readiness and emotional comfort, we replace anxious moments with empowering ones so kids feel prepared, proud, and excited for what’s next.

This is the cornerstone of our customized swimming lessons at NSA. Just like the building blocks that need to be in place when putting together a tower, our swimmers’ individual progressions become the building blocks that lead to stronger, more advanced abilities.

Adaptive Instruction for Individual Growth

Children learn at different speeds, and our instructors are trained to recognize when a swimmer is ready for a new challenge. Each instructor brings extraordinary emotional intelligence to the program that enables them to identify and recognize individual progression readiness. Any hesitation and every question is viewed as an opportunity to explain a skill, reiterate the steps, and make room for action and repetition.

Since our classes are small, our instructors can connect meaningfully with each child, providing instant feedback and positive reinforcement that are foundational to building trust. Our kids never feel pressured to “keep up.” Instead, they feel encouraged to keep trying.

Our class levels are broken into three phases:

1. FUNdamentals, where the focus is on buoyancy, breath control, and calm body movement

2. SAFEty, which emphasizes water awareness, safety practices, and independent movements

3. TECHnique, where we move from fundamentals and safety onto refining strokes and enhancing technique.

We ensure our learners swim with confidence, safety, and sound proficiency. This is what sets our swim classes apart, making it a standout choice for parents.
