Floatation devices are always a hot topic in the swim community. We’re here to help you navigate when floatation devices are appropriate and when they are actually negatively impacting your child. So, what’s the truth? Check the link in our bio for the full story π
1). “When should my child wear floatation”?
In and around natural bodies of water (lakes, oceans, rivers).
2). “What about at the pool”?
Ideally, you should avoid the use of floatation devices in the pool.
3). “Why? Isn’t it safer for my child to be in a floatation device”?
Nope. Supervised swimming without flotation is the best option.
Floatation devices such as puddle jumpers actually hinder your child’s ability to learn how to swim. Are they convenient? Well, in the long run - still no. Not at all. You might be able to enjoy a book by the pool knowing that your child is “safe” in the puddle jumper but the setbacks you will experience in your child’s swim journey simply aren’t worth it.

Say goodbye to the days of lounging at the pool with a good book and a cocktail. As parents, we have a new role. Think of a trip to the pool like a trip to Disney. Would you ever take your eyes off of your child at an amusement park? Are you having a relaxing, fun, vacation when you visit Disney World? Nope!
Truthfully, any activities in or around water are the most dangerous. Your eyes should be focused on your children, allowing them a turn at enjoying the pool. Take time to enjoy it with them. Get in the water, splash around, and create those core memories.

πHere are some talking points for your older swimmers! π
1) Confident 7+ Year Old Swimmers - We need a buddy when we swim. We NEVER swim alone. All swimmers should have a buddy with them before they take the plunge.
2) Confident 4 to 6 Year Old Swimmers - We need grown-up's eyes watching us when we swim. Before we jump in, we need to check to make sure our caregiver is watching. We never go in the water without our grown-up's eyes watching us.
3) Walking Feet Around Water - We always use walking feet around water because with water comes slippery surfaces. Be mindful that you may have amazing balance and quick reflexes but those around you may not and slipping and sliding will happen if you run.
4) Always Keep Hands, Feet, & Flippers to Yourself - Have a blast splashing and playing in the water, but keep your extremities to yourself. We don't want a playful wrestle, push, or pull to cause an accident.
5) Look Before You Jump - We always check to make sure we are jumping out into open, clear water, avoiding other people, objects, and murky water.
6) How do we know it is safe to dive in? - The first step is to look for signage. We all know what the 'No Diving' sign looks like. Obviously, we know not to dive if we see that sign, but what if there isn't a sign and no indication of how deep the water is? In these cases we test the depth with our feet first. If the water is over your head, it is safe enough to dive in. If you do see depth indicators, you are looking for the water to be at least 5 feet deep before you dive.
7) What to Do if Someone is Struggling in the Water - Unless you took a lifeguard class, you never jump in after a friend or sibling who is struggling. Get a grownup right away so they can help.
8) Lifejackets on When in A Boat - Everyone needs a lifejacket when we are on any sort of water craft.
9) The Only Thing in Our Mouths When Swimming Should Be A Bubble - We avoid swimming with gum, hard candy, or any kind of food while swimming. All of these are a choking hazard while swimming.
10) Younger Sibling are Watching &Following - Remember that younger siblings need a grownup supervising them at all times around water.

πMay is Swim Safety Month π
Believe it or not, swim safety starts at home! We suggest talking about being safe around water BEFORE you get to the pool. That way no one is overly excited and everyone can focus on the conversation.
Some pointers for your swim safety discussion -
1) Have a script. Make the conversation the same every single time you are getting ready to go to the pool. Make sure every parent and caregiver highlights the same rules. Every. Single. Time. Your kiddos should know the "swim speech" by heart and should be repeating it back to you with annoyance in their voices. This doesn't mean you should stop giving the speech. Stick with it!
2) Set clear expectations and don't falter! Just like with crossing a busy road full of cars, your expectations and rules should be very clear. No exceptions.
3) Establish clear parameters for your child. Reiterate that we NEVER go in the water without a grownup.
4) Indicate ONE entry point of the pool. Stay behind a certain line of the pool deck until a grownup says it is okay to get in the pool.
5) Communicate. If your child wears a flotation device, make sure to communicate when your child is wearing the device and when they are not. Most accidents happen when a child has a false sense of security provided by a flotation device that they are no longer wearing.
6) Age group rules. Remind your younger kiddos that they cannot swim as well as older brother/sister. Remind your older kiddos that their little siblings cannot swim as well as them. It is important for both age groups to have a clear understanding of their ability in the water. Make clear rules against following older brother or sister into deep water. Make sure older siblings are not left responsible for younger swimmers. Just because your oldest can stand and hold your youngest does not mean it should happen. Especially without ADULT supervision.

Introducing Ms. Katie!
Ms. Katie started her swim journey when she was just 15 months old. Her very first job teaching swim was actually working for the same person who taught her how to swim! She swam competitively throughout her childhood starting in 3rd grade. She continued to swim throughout high school and played on the water polo team.
Katie joined Nashville Swim Academy in July of this year with 4 years of experience teaching swimming under her belt. We have been thrilled to have her join our team.
When we asked Ms. Katie what she enjoys most about teaching swim lessons, she said "The kids! For me, the second the kids show up for a lesson, nothing else in the world matters. I get to spend the next 30-40 minutes totally focused on them, their learning, and their progress. They bring so much fun energy to the class! I love when a kid learns something new and is so proud of themself for it."
Katie enjoys working with all ages but especially loves the two and thre-year-olds because of their innocence and wonder. She loves being able to contribute to them learning new skills in a structured way. Fun fact about Ms. Katie is she knows American Sign Language!

Miss Laney's favorite part about teaching swim is the kids!! She says, "They're so sweet and funny and they teach me so much even when I'm teaching them about swim! I love watching them grow throughout the year and seeing some of them continue to swim for the Dolphins at Ensworth. I like the older groups (prep) because I'm teaching them more strokes. I would love to be the reason they love to swim and continue to swim for clubs or their schools."
